Management Theory X or Theory Y?

Douglas McGregor argues that Theory X was a self-fulfilling prophecy. When people are subjected to Theory X management, they behave in unproductive ways. Managers should consider that they wrongly assume this behavior is representative of a person's inherent nature. It can reinforce their belief that people cannot be trusted and need to be controlled.
